What are the main influences in your designs today?
Making the most out of average waves. Fun, speed, magic. Finding the right combo of outline, rocker, rails and foam to get you the most out of your session.
現在デザインにおいて、最も影響を受けていることは何ですか？
普段割れている平均的な波からも最大限のものを引き出し、楽しくてスピードを出しやすくマジックと思ってもらえるようなボードを作ること。アウトライン、ロッカー、レイル、フォームの正しいコンビネーションを見つけ出して、それが各サーファーにバッチリ合えばと考えています。
How would you describe your shaping philosophy?
What board is going to let you have the most fun? We're all about realistically assessing where you surf and specifically what are YOU trying to do on the wave. Then we make the right board with the right dimensions that will allow you to reach your potential and surf the way you want to surf.
自分のシェイプ哲学をどのように表現できますか？
どんなボードが乗ってみて一番楽しめるのか？ということを考えています。現実的な観点も踏まえて、どこでどのような波に乗って、その波でどんなサーフィンをしたいのかを見極めることも重視しています。そういった情報を元にライダーのポテンシャルを最大限に引き出し、理想のサーフィンに近づけることのできる正しいサイズとモデルを作っていくことです。
What do you get out of shaping that you couldn't get from any other kind of work?
It's rewarding to know we've made things that are bringing people joy & stoke everyday.
他の仕事では得がたいような、シェイパーという仕事ならではの魅力は何ですか？
人に楽しさと興奮を毎日与えられる物を造るというのは、とても価値のある事だと思っています。
What do you enjoy most about surfboard shaping?
Taking something I dreamed up in my brain and then seeing it translate into a functional form. Getting to be a test pilot and experiment with my own shapes out in the water.
シェイプをする上で何が一番楽しいですか？
頭の中で思い描いている事を形にする事、その形がうまく海で機能するような形に持っていく事です。さらに自分がテストパイロットになってそのボードを海で試せることは最高の楽しみですね。
What personal characteristics do you feel are necessary to be a successful shaper?
Design skill and a good eye to see what will work combined with the coordination to make it happen. I also feel really strongly about not being a flake. I started shaping more than ten years ago because I got sick of getting the run around and waiting for custom boards to get finished that would take months. I take pride in replying to emails, calls and texts right away. I send customers photos of their boards in production and I deliver when I say I'm going to, without making shortcuts. I think it also helps that I surf -- a lot.
シェイパーとして活躍するにはどんな個性を持つ事が必要だと感じますか？
様々な要素を組み合わせて調整し仕上げていくデザイン能力と良い眼です。同時に薄っぺらな人間にはならずしっかりと責任ある行動を取れるということも重要だと強く思っています。実は１０数年前に、カスタムオーダーしたボードの完成を何ヶ月も待ちきれなくて、自分でシェイプを始めてしまったというのがきっかけなんです。そういうこともあって、自分に対するメールや電話などの問い合わせには責任と誇りを持ってすぐに返答しています。必要なら進行状況も写真で送ったり、ショートカットせずにしっかりと伝えていますよ。そしてもちろん、たくさんサーフィンすることですね。
How do you bridge the gap between the business and artistic/design side of shaping?
Gotta be responsible, accessible and have integrity. Doing all the fun of creating is not possible without taking care of business!
シェイピングにおいて、ビジネスサイドとアートサイドのギャップがありますが、どうやってバランスを取ってますか？
しっかりと責任を持つことです。ちゃんと連絡が取れて誠実であること。クリエイトする楽しさを保っていくにはちゃんとビジネスも動いていないと不可能だと考えています。
Tell us about the most rewarding surfboard design you have been involved with in your career.
Our Sub model is guaranteed fun. Works for everyone, makes crap days awesome days. Always puts a smile on someone's face. Goal has always been to make boards that don’t sacrifice speed while being able to go wherever on the wave that you want to go. I feel that I really nailed this goal on a few models — The Polyphonic, Context, Ill, Sabertooth and Destroyer, amongst others. Besides making magic boards for customers, being able to make little grom boards for my own kids is probably the most rewarding.
今までのシェイピングキャリアで、最も実りある、またやりがいのあるデザインだと思うものを教えてください。
Subは楽しいことを間違いなく約束できます。だれが乗っても楽しめて、波が良くない日でも最高に楽しい日に変えることだってできる、ラインアップでいつもスマイルでいられますね。
波の行きたい場所に自由にスピードを殺さずに行く事が可能なボードを造ることをいつも目標にしています。Polyphonic, Context, Ill, Sabertooth, Destroyerは数あるモデルの中でも、特にそれを実現できたモデルです。マジックボードを作ることに加えて、自分にも子供がいるのですが、子供用にボードをたくさん造るということも、とてもやりがいのある作業ですね。
Where do you see the future of surfboard design headed?
Anything goes. we're not limited by convention. You can ride whatever you want, try different things. The future is now! which is the best thing, I think. Surfers are free, nowadays, to surf all types of boards. When I was a kid in the 80′s and 90′s, everybody surfed really similar equipment. Now when you paddle out, that is definitely not the case. People have really diverse quivers now. I love it. I think this is the future.
未来のサーフボードのデザインはどこへ向かってると思いますか？
何でも起こり得ますね。決まり事なんてなく縛られるものはないのだから、自分が試してみたいボードを試すべきだと思います。そう未来は今にある！ サーファーの良いところは自由であるということだと思います。自分が子供だった80〜90年代はみんな似たようなボードでサーフィンしてましたが、今は全く違って、みんなそれぞれ違うデザインのボードを持ってますよね。これこそが未来だと思っています。
What makes your boards different from others on the market?
All custom, one of a kind art & color work married with ultra-functional shapes.
マーケットにある他のブランドと違う点はなんですか？
基本的に全てカスタムボードであるということですね。ファンクショナル（機能的）なシェイプと融合した他にないユニークなアートやカラーが特徴だと思います。
Any words of advice for surfers looking to find a great board?
Watch yourself on video. Don't just think about your height & weight and where you surf. What are trying to do on the wave? Are you most concerned with pulling in and getting barreled? Are you simply trying to find the right line on the wave and maximize speed? Are you having trouble getting as many waves as you'd like? What about your current equipment is limiting you? Ask some thoughtful, realistic questions! Focus on fun.
素晴らしいボードを探しているサーファーにアドバイスはありますか？
自分をビデオで見て、身長や体重とどこでサーフするかだけを見ないでほしいですね。波に乗ってどんなサーフィンをしたいか？ということも重要です。プルインしてバレル（チューブ）に入りたいのか？それともシンプルに正しいラインを見つけてそのラインを優雅に最高のスピードでグライドしたいのか？たくさんの波を捕まえるのに苦労しているのか？今乗っているボードのどんなことが、自分に限界を与えてしまっているのか？など、より具体的に考えてみると見つけ やすくなると思います。そして大事なのは楽しむという事に集中する事ですね。
Of the current models you offer, which are your favorites and why?
Context: My personal favorite shortboard of all time. Just does exactly what I want, carries a ton of speed, always surprises me with its performance level. - Sabertooth: New model that I’ve had a ton of good feedback on. Catches waves and flies like a fish but turns like your favorite shortboard. A lot of versatility, nice little quiver killer. - Polyphonic: Can’t miss with this one. A true daily driver, leave in your car every day, works no matter what the waves are doing, ripper!
どのモデルが個人的に気に入ってますか？そしてなぜ？
Contextはいつでもお気に入りのショートボードです。自由自在に操れるのはもちろん、すごいスピードが出せて、そのパフォーマンスには自分でもいつも驚かされています。Sabertoothはたくさんの良いフィードバックを得ているモデルです。フィッシュ系のように波を捕まえやすく加速でき、ショートボードの様なターン性能も持ち合わせている、とても多才なモデルです。 Polyphonicも外せないですね。どんな波にも対応しやすく日常サーフィンに最高なので、車の中にはいつもに入れておきたいモデルです。
